Back on the Menu: Recipes for a reduced potassium diet

Our aim has been to put together some recipes and ideas to expand your food choices and enjoy the excitement and joy of cooking and eating.

During our contact with people who have kidney disease, we have been asked many times whether there is a recipe book we could recommend. We have developed this book to help people specifically on dialysis as we often hear that choices can be limited and people want to know what they can eat.

The recipes in this book are designed for adults with kidney disease who receive dialysis. The information is designed to be used in addition to the tailored advice you will receive from a renal dietitian. Please consult your dietitian about your individual needs, so you know what and how much to eat.

Our 'Back on the Menu: Low potassium recipe book'  provides easy to follow recipes developed for people who need to control the amount of potassium in their diet, particularly those with kidney disease or those requiring haemodialysis, who have been advised by their doctor to follow a low potassium diet.

The authors stress that recommendations for renal diets vary widely between individuals - this recipe book is best used in conjunction with dietary advice from a dietitian experienced in renal nutrition.

Eating Out: A Guide for Chronic Disease Patients

Eating Out a Guide for Chronic Kidney Disease-patients

Dining out is a lot of fun even if you are on a special diet. If the diet is well understood, it is possible to choose from most menus or buffet tables.

This booklet is designed to give general guidelines about food choices when eating out on a low potassium diet. The general principles of the diet still apply.

Note: Some of the recommended choices may not be suitable if you also require a low phosphate diet. Your dietitian can advise on appropriate individual choices.

Bush Tucker in Kidney Failure and Diabetes

This book is a helpful guide about eating Indigenous foods when you have chronic kidney disease and diabetes, especially when living in a remote home country. It provides the nutritional breakdown of many Australian Indigenous foods, including animals (such as wallaroo, kangaroo, possum), insects (such as moths, witchetty grubs, ants) and native fruits and vegetables, commonly known as bush tucker.

This resource can be used to develop a renal diet using bush tucker ingredients. It is designed to support a health professional who needs to explain that when you have sick kidneys, a special diet can slow down kidney failure and limit the build-up of waste products and fluid in the body.
