Brief Description:

Endometriosis has devastating impacts on sufferers, their community and the economy. It is important that endometriosis is recognised as more than just a gynaecological disorder. There is growing evidence to support that endometriosis increases a person’s risk of cardiometabolic disease (a group of common conditions e.g., hypertension, heart disease, stroke and kidney disease). Explanations for this include chronic inflammation caused by endometriosis and/or common treatments for endometriosis (e.g., hormone therapies and hysterectomy). There is an urgent need for improved understanding of the burden and implications of cardiometabolic disease and endometriosis, particularly in young women. It is critical that we take a snapshot of the current healthcare environment to better realise what level of understanding exists, for both doctors and patients, with respect to endometriosis and risk of cardiometabolic disease (including kidney disease). This research seeks to survey doctors and patients (those with a primary health concern of endometriosis or a cardiometabolic condition), to collect information about their current practice / experience of medical history taking and known risk factors for prompting / requesting further screening. Despite emerging evidence on the link between endometriosis and cardiometabolic disease, we hypothesise that many healthcare providers are not aware of this link, and/or do not implement longer-term surveillance and education for their patients. Our aim is to assess the current knowledge level of clinicians and patients about the important link between endometriosis and cardiometabolic health. We will undertake a survey-based quantitative analysis, that will provide a snapshot of current gynaecological history taking by healthcare providers from patients with cardiometabolic disease. Vice versa, we will investigate cardiometabolic history taking and screening by gynaecologists from patients with endometriosis. Surveys will be administered to both clinicians and patients with endometriosis and/or cardiometabolic disease.
